Fults Hill Prairie State Natural Area
Perched high on the limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River floodplain near Chester, Illinois, Fults Hill Prairie is one of the finest remaining hill prairies in the Midwest. Established in 1970 and spanning 997 acres across Monroe County, this State Natural Area protects a rare ecosystem where loess-covered bluffs support native grasses and wildflowers that have persisted here since before European settlement.
What makes Fults Hill Prairie genuinely special is its ecology. Hill prairies — dry grasslands clinging to steep, south- and west-facing bluff slopes — were never common, and most have been lost to development or woody encroachment. Here, you can walk among little bluestem, side-oats grama, and dozens of prairie wildflower species while taking in sweeping views of the Mississippi River valley below. The blufftop vistas alone are worth the trip.
Hikers will find trails winding through both prairie and wooded sections, offering a satisfying contrast between open sky and forested ravines. Birdwatchers and wildflower enthusiasts will find the most to appreciate, particularly during spring and early fall blooms. The site is also home to several uncommon reptile and insect species adapted to the dry bluff habitat.
Camping information is not currently confirmed for this site, so plan on visiting as a day trip or arranging lodging in nearby Chester or Waterloo.
The best time to visit is late April through June, when wildflowers peak and the bluffs are at their most dramatic. Fall offers quieter trails and warm prairie color. Come prepared with sturdy footwear — the bluff terrain is steep in places.
