Piney Creek Ravine State Natural Area
Ava, Illinois (Jackson, Randolph County)
Tucked into the rugged bluffs of southern Illinois, Piney Creek Ravine State Natural Area protects 198 acres of some of the most ecologically significant landscape in the Shawnee Hills. Established in 1972 near Ava in Jackson and Randolph Counties, this site earned its protected status for good reason — its sandstone canyons shelter plant communities that have persisted here since the last ice age.
The ravine system is the centerpiece. Sheer sandstone walls rise above a narrow creek bed, creating a cool, shaded microclimate where ferns, liverworts, and mosses blanket every surface. Several small waterfalls appear after rain, turning the canyon into something that feels more like Appalachia than the Midwest. Above the ravines, dry upland forests of shortleaf pine — one of the few native stands in Illinois — give the area its name and a distinctive character you won’t find elsewhere in the state.
Hiking is the primary activity here, with informal trails following the creek and climbing to ridgetop overlooks. The terrain is uneven and can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is essential. Birdwatchers will appreciate the mix of habitats, and the sandstone shelters along the bluffs contain Native American petroglyphs worth seeking out. There is no developed camping on-site, though nearby Shawnee National Forest offers plenty of options.
Spring brings wildflowers and the best waterfall flows. Fall delivers outstanding color from the mixed hardwood-pine canopy. Summer visits are rewarding too — the ravines stay noticeably cooler than surrounding areas. With a 4.7-star rating across 120 reviews, this is a genuine hidden gem.
