Hawn State Park
Missouri (Ste. Genevieve County)
Hawn State Park stretches across nearly 5,000 acres in Ste. Genevieve County, offering one of Missouri‘s most striking natural landscapes. What sets Hawn apart is its geology — ancient sandstone shut-ins, clear-running creeks over exposed bedrock, and pine-oak woodland that feels more like the Appalachian foothills than the Midwest.
The park’s two main trails are the draw. Whispering Pine Trail winds through stands of shortleaf pine along Pickle Creek, where water flows over smooth sandstone slabs in a series of small cascades. The Pickle Creek Trail, a National Natural Landmark, passes through a narrow valley lined with towering bluffs, ferns, mosses, and wildflowers that thrive in the sheltered microclimate. Both trails are moderate in difficulty and well worth the effort.
Beyond hiking, visitors come for birding — the pine forests attract species uncommon elsewhere in Missouri — and for fishing along the River aux Vases, which borders the park. In spring, the wildflower displays along Pickle Creek are exceptional, with shooting stars, columbine, and trillium covering the forest floor.
Hawn offers basic campgrounds with sites tucked into the woods, giving a quieter, more secluded feel than many Missouri state parks. Facilities are modest, so come prepared for a rustic experience.
The best time to visit is mid-April through May for wildflowers and fall color in October. Summer brings humidity and ticks, but the shaded creek valleys stay cooler than surrounding areas. Winter hiking is peaceful and uncrowded, with the sandstone formations at their most dramatic against bare trees.
