Fort Phoenix State Reservation sits at the tip of a peninsula in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where the Acushnet River meets Buzzards Bay. This compact one-acre site packs remarkable history and coastal beauty into a small footprint—anchored by a Revolutionary War-era stone fort whose cannons still point out over the harbor toward New Bedford.
The fort itself is the main draw. Five cannon emplacements line the ramparts, and interpretive signage walks visitors through the site’s role in the Battle of Fairhaven during the American Revolution and its reactivation during the War of 1812. Climbing the earthworks offers sweeping views of New Bedford Harbor, the Fairhaven-New Bedford Bridge, and Butler Flats Lighthouse sitting offshore.
Below the fort, a crescent-shaped beach stretches along the shoreline—popular with local families for swimming in calm, protected waters during summer months. A paved walkway connects the beach to the fort and continues along the seawall, making it a favorite spot for evening walks, especially at sunset when the light hits the harbor just right. Fishing from the rocky shoreline pulls in striped bass and bluefish seasonally.
The reservation has no camping facilities, but picnic areas and restrooms are available during the season. No entrance fee is charged.
Visit between late May and early October for beach access and the best weather. Early morning or late afternoon visits avoid summer crowds and deliver the best light for photographing the fort and harbor. History buffs and beach lovers alike will find this small reservation punches well above its size.
