Damariscotta Lake State Park
Jefferson, Maine (Lincoln County)
Damariscotta Lake State Park sits on the western shore of its namesake lake in Jefferson, Maine, offering one of the Midcoast region’s best freshwater beaches. At just 19 acres, this compact state park punches well above its weight — its sandy beach and clear, spring-fed waters have earned it a 4.6-star rating from over 440 visitors.
The park’s main draw is its genuine sand beach, a rarity in Maine’s lake country where rocky shorelines are the norm. The shallow entry and gradual dropoff make it especially popular with families who have young swimmers. On warm summer days, the beach fills early, so arriving before 10 AM on weekends is worth the effort.
Swimming and sunbathing anchor the experience, but the park also offers picnic areas with charcoal grills scattered through a shaded grove of white pines just steps from the water. A small concession stand operates during peak season. Kayakers and canoeists can launch from the shoreline to explore Damariscotta Lake’s 4,381 acres of paddling territory, where loons and bald eagles are regular companions.
The park does not offer camping, but nearby options in the Jefferson and Nobleboro area fill the gap for visitors wanting an overnight stay.
Peak season runs from late June through August, when water temperatures reach their warmest. September brings fewer crowds and striking foliage reflections on the lake’s surface. The park is day-use only, typically open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Lincoln County’s quiet gem — simple, beautiful, and refreshingly uncrowded on weekdays.
