Sutcliffe/Nixon Road follows State Route 446 along the southern shore of Pyramid Lake in Washoe County, Nevada, within the boundaries of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. This scenic drive offers close-up views of one of the most striking desert lakes in North America — a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan that covers over 100,000 acres of brilliant blue-green water surrounded by barren desert mountains.

Pyramid Lake takes its name from a distinctive pyramid-shaped tufa formation rising from the water near the eastern shore. The lake has no outlet and is sustained by the Truckee River flowing from Lake Tahoe, creating a terminal lake whose mineral content gives the water its remarkable color. The lake supports the endangered cui-ui fish, found nowhere else on Earth, and a renowned Lahontan cutthroat trout fishery that draws anglers from across the West.

The route passes through the Paiute communities of Sutcliffe and Nixon, connecting the lake’s western recreation areas with the tribal headquarters. The surrounding landscape is starkly beautiful — pale desert hills dropping to the intense blue water create dramatic contrasts, particularly during early morning and late afternoon light.

A tribal fishing permit is required for angling, and visitors should respect reservation regulations regarding access, camping, and photography. The lake is most popular for fishing from October through June, while summer brings swimming and boating. Services are minimal along the route, so visitors should carry supplies from Reno or Sparks.
