Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Sheepscot River in Lincoln County, Fort Edgecomb State Historic Site packs remarkable history into its compact 3 acres. Built in 1808 to protect the thriving port of Wiscasset during tensions leading up to the War of 1812, the fort’s octagonal blockhouse is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the United States — a rare survivor from the young nation’s early coastal defense network.

The centerpiece is the two-story wooden blockhouse, which visitors can climb through to explore its original gun ports and take in sweeping views of the river and Wiscasset village across the water. The surrounding earthwork fortifications, restored and well-maintained, give a tangible sense of how soldiers prepared to defend this stretch of coast more than two centuries ago. Interpretive signage throughout the grounds brings the fort’s military history to life without overwhelming the peaceful setting.

Beyond the history, the site is a quietly beautiful spot for a picnic. Grassy grounds shaded by mature trees slope toward the riverbank, where you can watch lobster boats and sailboats navigate the Sheepscot. It’s an ideal stop when exploring the Midcoast region, pairing naturally with a visit to Wiscasset’s antique shops and seafood shacks just across the bridge.

The best time to visit is late May through September, when the grounds are fully open and the blockhouse is accessible. Plan for about an hour — enough to explore thoroughly and soak in the views.
