Forest Capital Museum State Park sits on 14 acres in Perry, the seat of Taylor County and the heart of Florida’s timber country. Established in 1967, this compact park tells the story of an industry that shaped North Florida’s economy, culture, and landscape for over a century.

The centerpiece is the Florida Forest Capital Museum, where exhibits trace the full arc of the state’s forestry heritage — from turpentine stills and crosscut saws to modern sustainable harvesting. Outside, the Cracker Homestead is a faithfully reconstructed 1864 pioneer dwelling complete with a detached kitchen, smokehouse, and cane syrup furnace. Walking the grounds feels like stepping into rural Florida before the highways arrived.

A half-mile nature trail loops through longleaf pine flatwoods, one of the most threatened ecosystems in the Southeast. Interpretive signs identify native plants and explain the role of prescribed fire in keeping these woods healthy. Birdwatchers should watch for red-cockaded woodpeckers and brown-headed nuthatches in the older pines.

The park hosts the Florida Forest Festival each October, drawing thousands to Perry for lumberjack competitions, forestry demonstrations, and local food. If your visit coincides, plan for crowds but enjoy the spectacle.

There is no camping on-site, but Econfina River State Park is a short drive south with full campground facilities along a gorgeous spring-fed river.

The best months to visit are October through April, when humidity drops and the flatwoods are pleasant for walking. Summer visitors should bring water and bug spray — this is deep North Florida, and both the heat and the mosquitoes mean business.
