Standing guard over the confluence of the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers since 1842, St. Marks Light is one of Florida’s oldest surviving lighthouses. Built to replace an earlier tower undermined by erosion, the current structure features a distinctive limestone base that has weathered hurricanes, Civil War skirmishes, and nearly two centuries of Gulf storms. The lighthouse remains an active navigational aid, though it is not open to the public for climbing. Golden-hour photography from the surrounding salt marshes yields stunning results, especially during fall and winter when migratory birds fill the skies. Visitors should explore the adjacent St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, the historic town of St. Marks, and the popular Tallahassee-St. Marks Trail.
