East Bay Bike Path State Park

East Bay Bike Path State Park

Rhode Island (Bristol, Providence County)

The East Bay Bike Path stretches 14.5 miles along the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, tracing a former railroad corridor from Providence’s India Point Park south to Independence Park in Bristol. Established in 1987, it was one of New England’s first rail-trail conversions and remains one of its finest — a flat, paved ribbon of coastline that draws walkers, runners, cyclists, and inline skaters year-round.

What sets this path apart is the water. Long stretches run directly alongside Narragansett Bay, with unobstructed views across to Prudence Island and the distant western shore. You’ll cross tidal marshes, skirt Colt State Park’s sweeping lawns, and pass through the quiet downtown centers of Barrington, Warren, and Bristol — each with cafes and shops worth a stop.

The path is fully paved and mostly flat, making it accessible to all fitness levels. Families with young children on training wheels share the trail with serious road cyclists logging weekend miles. Several access points and parking areas let you ride as much or as little as you’d like. The Barrington and Bristol sections offer the most dramatic bay views.

Spring and fall deliver the best riding conditions — mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and either blooming shoreline or fiery New England foliage. Summer weekends get busy, especially near Colt State Park. Winter rides are peaceful but dress for bay wind.

No camping is available directly on the path, though nearby Colt State Park offers options worth exploring. Bring water — facilities are limited between trailheads.
