Craig Lake State Park
Michigan (Baraga County)
Tucked deep into the rugged backcountry of Baraga County, Craig Lake State Park is one of Michigan’s most remote and untouched wilderness areas. Spanning nearly 9,732 acres of dense forest, pristine lakes, and rocky terrain, the park rewards those willing to make the journey with a level of solitude that’s increasingly rare in the Upper Peninsula.
Craig Lake itself is the largest of six lakes within the park, its clear waters rimmed by granite outcrops and old-growth hemlock. The backcountry setting means no paved roads lead to the interior — visitors reach the lakes via a rough, unpaved access road followed by foot trails, making this a destination for those who prefer their wilderness unpolished.
Hiking trails wind through boreal forest and along lakeshores, offering chances to spot moose, loons, bald eagles, and black bears in their natural habitat. Canoeing and kayaking are exceptional here, with portage routes connecting several of the park’s lakes for multi-day paddling adventures. Fishing for brook trout, bass, and northern pike draws anglers who appreciate uncrowded waters.
Backcountry campsites are scattered along the lakeshores, offering rustic, carry-in camping with no modern amenities — pack everything in and out. This is true wilderness camping at its finest.
The best time to visit is late June through September, when trails are passable and bugs have eased up. Come prepared for changing weather, limited cell service, and the kind of quiet that reminds you why wild places matter.
