Big Bay Point Light stands on a dramatic Lake Superior cliff in Big Bay, Michigan. Built in 1896, this red-brick lighthouse guided ships along the rugged Upper Peninsula coastline for decades. It gained notoriety as the backdrop for the 1959 film Anatomy of a Murder, based on events that occurred nearby. Now operating as a bed-and-breakfast, the lighthouse remains an active navigational aid but is not open to the general public for climbing. Guests of the inn, however, enjoy exclusive access to the tower and grounds. Golden hour photography is best in summer, when the warm light contrasts against Lake Superior’s deep blue. Nearby, Huron Mountains and Yellow Dog Falls offer excellent hiking.
