Sand Hills Light

Sand Hills Light

Lake Superior · Michigan

Perched on the rugged Keweenaw Peninsula shoreline in Ahmeek, Michigan, Sand Hills Light has guided mariners since 1919. The square yellow-brick lighthouse is one of the last staffed lights built on the Great Lakes, distinguished by its attached keeper’s quarters and striking architectural style that blends function with early 20th-century craftsmanship.

Now operating as a private bed-and-breakfast, the lighthouse is not open to the general public, though overnight guests can explore the tower and grounds. The best photography comes during golden hour, when warm light plays off the brick against Lake Superior’s vast horizon.

Nearby, visitors can explore the historic Keweenaw copper mining towns, Brockway Mountain Drive, and the beaches of Great Sand Bay.
