Catharine Valley Trail
New York (Finger Lakes County)
Catharine Valley Trail traces a scenic 12-mile corridor through the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region, following the historic route of a former railroad bed between Watkins Glen and Horseheads. Established in 2000, this 218-acre state park offers one of the most accessible and rewarding trail experiences in the Finger Lakes, threading through wetlands, farmland, and small-town charm that defines this corner of upstate New York.
The crushed stone trail runs flat and wide, making it ideal for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing depending on the season. Birdwatchers will find the marshy stretches particularly rewarding — great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, and the occasional bald eagle frequent the Catharine Creek corridor. Horseback riding is permitted on designated sections, and the trail connects to Watkins Glen State Park, opening up possibilities for longer adventures that pair gorge hiking with a relaxed rail-trail ride.
The trail passes through the villages of Montour Falls and Odessa, where you can grab lunch or a coffee without ever loading up the car. Interpretive signs along the route highlight the area’s canal and railroad history, adding depth to what might otherwise be a simple walk.
Spring and fall are the best times to visit — wildflowers carpet the wetlands in May, while October brings peak foliage that lights up the valley. Summer is pleasant but can be humid. There’s no camping directly on the trail, but nearby Watkins Glen State Park offers full campground facilities just minutes away.
