Buttermilk Falls State Park
Tucked into the southern end of Cayuga Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region, Buttermilk Falls State Park draws its name from the frothy cascade that tumbles more than 500 feet down a series of rocky ledges near the park entrance. Established in 1924 and spanning 811 acres, the park packs a remarkable amount of variety into a relatively compact space — waterfalls, deep gorges, wooded hillsides, and a spring-fed swimming hole at the base of the falls.
The main gorge trail climbs alongside Buttermilk Creek through ten waterfalls, passing sculpted pools and overhanging rock formations before reaching Pinnacle Rock and Lake Letchworth. It’s a moderately strenuous hike that rewards every uphill step. Beyond the gorge, the Rim Trail and Bear Trail loop through quiet upland forest, offering gentler terrain and seasonal wildflower displays. Fishing in Buttermilk Creek yields brook trout for those with patience and a valid New York license.
The natural swimming area at the falls’ base is one of the Finger Lakes’ best-kept secrets — cold, clear water surrounded by rock walls, open from late June through Labor Day. Picnic areas with pavilions sit nearby.
Summer and early fall deliver the best conditions, though late September brings spectacular foliage along the gorge walls. Spring runoff makes the waterfalls thunderous but can close trails temporarily.
Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, cooling off in a glacially carved pool, or simply looking for a scenic afternoon hike, Buttermilk Falls delivers without the crowds of its more famous neighbors.
