Established in 1920, the park centers on Enfield Glen, where Enfield Creek tumbles over 12 waterfalls across a series of stone-walled gorges — the crown jewel being Lucifer Falls, a 115-foot cascade that ranks among the most photographed waterfalls in the Northeast.

The Gorge Trail follows the creek upward through shaded hemlock forest, winding past moss-covered rock faces and natural swimming holes. At the base of the park, a stone-lined swimming area fed by the creek offers one of the most refreshing dips you’ll find anywhere in the Finger Lakes. Hikers can explore roughly 10 miles of trails ranging from easy streamside walks to steeper rim paths with panoramic gorge views. Birding, fishing, and cross-country skiing round out the year-round appeal.

The park offers tent and trailer campsites along with cabins, making it a solid base camp for exploring the broader Finger Lakes wine country, Ithaca’s restaurant scene, and nearby Buttermilk Falls and Taughannock Falls state parks.

Visit between late May and early October for the best conditions — summer brings warm swimming weather, while early fall lights up the gorge in brilliant orange and gold. Spring snowmelt makes the waterfalls especially powerful, though some trails may be temporarily closed for safety. Arrive early on summer weekends; this park draws a devoted following.
