About This Park
Located on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center offers visitor information and serves as a waypoint before beginning your journey to the Boston Harbor Islands.
Boston Harbor Islands State Park
Scattered across Boston Harbor like stepping stones into the Atlantic, Boston Harbor Islands State Park encompasses 404 acres spread across a remarkable archipelago of 34 islands and peninsulas just minutes from downtown Boston. Few state parks anywhere offer this combination — wild coastal landscapes visible from a major city skyline, accessible only by ferry, creating an immediate sense of escape the moment you leave the dock.
Each island has its own character. Georges Island anchors the park with Fort Warren, a Civil War-era granite fortress where you can explore dim casemates and ramparts with sweeping harbor views. Spectacle Island offers the best swimming beaches and hiking trails that climb to panoramic overlooks of the Boston skyline. Grape Island feels genuinely remote, with wooded trails winding through thickets of wild grapes and bayberry. Peddocks Island mixes salt marshes, coastal forest, and the ruins of Fort Andrews.
Activities range from tide pooling and beachcombing to fishing, kayaking, and guided ranger walks. Birdwatchers will find herons, cormorants, and migratory shorebirds across the outer islands. Several islands offer primitive camping — a rare chance to sleep under the stars with the Boston skyline glowing across the water.
The ferry season typically runs late June through early September, with limited service into October. Summer weekends draw crowds to Georges and Spectacle Islands, so visiting midweek or exploring the quieter outer islands rewards you with near-solitude. Bring layers — harbor breezes keep temperatures cooler than the mainland, even in July.
