Tucked into the rugged terrain of Van Buren County, Bone Cave State Natural Area protects 400 acres of some of Tennessee’s most fascinating underground geology. The park takes its name from a cave where Pleistocene-era animal bones were discovered, including remains of a jaguar — evidence that Tennessee’s landscape once looked very different from the Cumberland Plateau forests that blanket it today.

The cave itself is the centerpiece, a significant geological and paleontological site that draws curious visitors and researchers alike. Above ground, the natural area preserves old-growth forest, dramatic sandstone bluffs, and a network of sinkholes characteristic of the karst topography that defines this part of the plateau. Hiking trails wind through the property, offering views of the surrounding hollows and ridgelines that feel remarkably remote despite the natural area’s modest size.

Birding is rewarding here, particularly during spring migration when warblers move through the forest canopy. Wildflower enthusiasts will find trilliums, hepatica, and other woodland species blooming along the trails from late March through May — arguably the best window to visit. This is a day-use destination with no developed campground on-site, so plan accordingly. Nearby Fall Creek Falls State Park offers full camping facilities if you want to make a weekend of it.
