Fall Creek Falls State Natural Area

Tucked into the rugged Cumberland Plateau where Bledsoe and Van Buren counties meet, Fall Creek Falls State Natural Area spans over 16,000 acres of dramatic gorges, old-growth hardwoods, and some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the eastern United States. The park’s centerpiece — Fall Creek Falls itself — plunges 256 feet into a shaded plunge pool, making it one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rockies.

But the main falls are just the beginning. Cane Creek Falls, Cane Creek Cascades, and Piney Falls each offer their own character, connected by a well-maintained trail system that winds through hemlock-lined gorges and past moss-covered rock formations. Hikers can choose from easy paved overlook paths or more challenging gorge trails that drop into the canyon floor. The park also draws swimmers to its natural pool area, anglers to its stocked lake, and birders scanning the canopy for warblers and pileated woodpeckers.

Beyond day-use activities, Fall Creek Falls offers golf, mountain biking, paddleboarding on Fall Creek Falls Lake, and a nature center with programming for families.

Fall colors peak in mid-to-late October, when the plateau’s elevation produces vivid displays of red maple and hickory against the dark sandstone walls — easily the most popular time to visit. Spring brings wildflower blooms and roaring waterfalls fed by seasonal rains. Summer stays lush and moderately warm at elevation, making it a reliable escape from lower-elevation heat across Tennessee.
