Burgess Falls State Park is one of Tennessee’s most spectacular waterfall destinations, tucked into 350 acres of rugged gorge along the Falling Water River in Putnam County. The park’s main trail follows the river downstream through a series of four cascading waterfalls, each more dramatic than the last, culminating in the stunning 136-foot Burgess Falls — a thundering curtain of water plunging into a deep, emerald pool carved into ancient rock.

The roughly 1.5-mile one-way trail to the big falls is moderate in difficulty, with some steep sections and staircases near the overlooks. It’s well-maintained but not stroller-friendly — wear sturdy shoes, especially after rain when the rocky paths get slick. Along the way, the smaller upper and middle cascades offer quieter spots to pause and take in the scenery without the crowds that gather at the main falls.

Hiking is the primary draw, but the park also offers fishing in the river and nearby Burgess Falls Lake, as well as picnic areas near the trailhead. There is no camping within the park itself, so plan accordingly — nearby Cookeville offers plenty of lodging options.

Spring and early summer bring the heaviest water flow, making the falls most dramatic, though fall foliage transforms the gorge into a corridor of gold and crimson. Summer weekends draw big crowds, so aim for weekday mornings if you want the overlooks to yourself. This is a place where the payoff matches every step of the effort.
