Burgess Falls State Natural Area in Putnam County, Tennessee, is one of the state’s most rewarding short hikes. Spanning 217 acres along the Falling Water River, this park packs four cascading waterfalls into a single 1.5-mile trail — culminating in the stunning 136-foot Burgess Falls, which plunges into a deep turquoise pool carved from ancient limestone.

The main trail follows the river downstream, passing each waterfall in succession. The first two cascades are smaller appetizers, but the third drop — a broad, powerful curtain of water — signals that something dramatic lies ahead. The final overlook delivers: Burgess Falls crashes into a gorge so deep and lush it feels almost tropical. An upper and lower viewing platform let you take it in from different angles.

Beyond the marquee waterfall trail, a network of shorter paths winds through the surrounding forest, offering birding opportunities and wildflower viewing, especially in spring when trillium and Virginia bluebells carpet the understory. The park also features a small fishing area near the dam upstream.

Burgess Falls does not offer camping — this is a day-use park only. Nearby Center Hill Lake and several private campgrounds provide overnight options for those making a weekend of it.

The best time to visit is spring through early summer, when water flow is highest and the falls are at their most impressive. Fall foliage season draws crowds too. Arrive early on weekends — the small parking lot fills quickly, and this hidden gem is no longer much of a secret.
