Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park
Zion, Illinois (Lake County)
Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park stretches across 4,160 acres along Lake Michigan’s shoreline in Zion, Illinois, making it the only remaining beach ridge shoreline left in the state. Established in 1948, this Lake County gem preserves a landscape found nowhere else in Illinois — shifting sand dunes, coastal wetlands, and prairie grasses that transition from open beach to dense oak savanna within a single hike.
The park’s six miles of sandy Lake Michigan beach draw swimmers and sunbathers from spring through early fall, but the real draw for repeat visitors is the trail system winding through surprisingly diverse ecosystems. The Dead River Trail loops through marshland where great blue herons wade and painted turtles sun themselves on fallen logs. Birdwatchers flock here during spring and fall migration, when the lakefront corridor funnels warblers, raptors, and shorebirds through in impressive numbers.
Fishing is popular along the North Point Marina and the Dead River, where anglers cast for bass, bluegill, and the occasional northern pike. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing replace the beach crowds with quiet solitude.
The park’s resort and conference center offers comfortable lodging for those who prefer beds to tents, with lake-view rooms that book up fast in summer. For day visitors, picnic shelters and accessible beach areas make it easy to spend a full afternoon.
Visit between late May and September for beach weather, or come in October when the oak savannas turn gold and the crowds thin out. The 4.5-star rating from nearly 5,000 visitors speaks for itself.
