Standing sentinel in the treacherous Death’s Door Passage since 1858, Pilot Island Light guided ships through one of Lake Michigan’s most dangerous straits near Gills Rock, Wisconsin. Severely battered by storms and erosion over the decades, the island and its structures fell into dramatic disrepair, though the light remains active as a navigational aid.
