Perched on the northern tip of Rock Island, Wisconsin, Pottawatomie Light holds the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse in the state, first lit in 1836 to guide vessels through the treacherous Death’s Door Passage. The original stone tower was replaced in 1858, and the lighthouse was decommissioned and is no longer active. The tower is not open to the public for climbing, though visitors can view the exterior after taking the Washington Island ferry and a secondary boat to Rock Island State Park. Golden hour offers the best photography light against the Lake Michigan backdrop. Nearby, explore the park’s hiking trails, stone boathouse, and the ruins of a Viking hall built by inventor Chester Thordarson.
