Standing guard at the entrance to Milwaukee’s harbor since 1899, this striking red lighthouse marks the outer breakwater along Lake Michigan’s western shore. The cast-iron tower was built to guide vessels safely into one of the Great Lakes’ busiest ports during the height of commercial shipping.

Still an active navigational aid maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lighthouse is not open to the public. However, it makes a compelling photographic subject — golden hour and dramatic winter ice formations offer the best shots. Charter boats and harbor cruises provide close-up views from the water.
