South Fox Island Light
Lake Michigan · Michigan
Perched on the remote South Fox Island in northern Lake Michigan, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners through the Manitou Passage since 1867. The square brick tower, paired with an attached keeper’s dwelling, stands as a testament to Michigan’s rich maritime heritage. Though automated and still active as a navigational aid, the lighthouse is not open to the public, and the island itself is largely undeveloped and accessible only by private boat. Golden hour light from the west makes sunset the ideal time for photography from the water. Nearby, North and South Manitou Islands, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and the charming port town of Leland offer excellent day-trip opportunities.
