Standing on remote Squaw Island in northern Lake Michigan since 1892, this active lighthouse guards the passage between Beaver Island and the mainland. The square brick tower rises above the island’s rugged shoreline, its light still guiding mariners through these treacherous waters. Originally staffed by keepers who endured harsh winters in near-total isolation, the station was automated in the mid-20th century. The lighthouse is not open to the public, though boaters can view it from the water. Golden hour provides the best photography opportunities, with dramatic lake sunsets behind the tower.
