Bass Harbor Head Light

Perched dramatically on the rugged cliffs of Mount Desert Island’s southwestern shore, Bass Harbor Head Light has guided mariners since 1858. This iconic 32-foot granite tower remains an active aid to navigation, its red glow visible for miles across the Atlantic.

While the lighthouse and keeper’s quarters are not open to the public, visitors can descend wooden stairs to rocky outcroppings offering spectacular views. The site is particularly stunning at sunset, when golden light illuminates the weathered tower against pink skies—photographers should arrive early for prime positioning.

Located within Acadia National Park, the lighthouse sits minutes from hiking trails, the charming fishing village of Bass Harbor, and ferry service to offshore islands. Free admission; parking limited.
