Mill Towns State Trail

Mill Towns State Trail

Minnesota

Mill Towns State Trail follows the Minnesota River valley through a landscape shaped by water, grain, and generations of industry. Stretching between Mankato and New Ulm, this paved multi-use trail traces the path of historic milling communities that once powered the region’s economy. Today, it offers a uniquely scenic corridor through river bluffs, wooded bottomlands, and open prairie remnants that make southern Minnesota so quietly beautiful.

The trail is ideal for cycling, running, and inline skating on its smooth, well-maintained surface. Birdwatchers will find the Minnesota River floodplain rich with herons, bald eagles, and migrating waterfowl, especially near the river crossings. In winter, the route serves cross-country skiers and snowshoers looking for a groomed path through the frozen valley.

What makes Mill Towns special is the cultural layer woven into the landscape. The trail connects communities with deep German-American heritage — New Ulm’s distinctive architecture and festivals are worth a stop on either end of your ride. Interpretive signs along the route highlight the flour milling history that once made this stretch of river an economic engine for the Upper Midwest.

The best time to visit is late September through mid-October, when the river bluffs ignite with fall color and the trail is comfortably uncrowded. Summer weekends draw more traffic but remain manageable.

Pack water and snacks, as services are limited between towns. The trail is flat to gently rolling, making it accessible for families and casual riders alike.
