Sakatah Lake State Park stretches across 810 acres along the southern shore of Lower Sakatah Lake, straddling the border of Le Sueur and Rice Counties in south-central Minnesota. The park sits at the intersection of the Big Woods hardwood forest and the western prairie, creating a landscape where towering oak and maple canopy gives way to open grassland — a transition zone that supports an unusually diverse mix of wildlife and wildflowers.

The 39-mile Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail runs directly through the park, making it a natural basecamp for cyclists and hikers exploring the paved route between Mankato and Faribault. The campground provides 62 drive-in sites — many shaded by mature hardwoods — along with a seasonal shower building. Sites fill quickly on summer weekends, so reservations through the Minnesota DNR are worth making early. A few walk-in sites offer more seclusion for those willing to carry gear a short distance.

Spring brings ephemeral woodland wildflowers carpeting the forest floor, while fall delivers some of the best leaf color in the region as the Big Woods remnant lights up. Summer is peak season for swimming and biking, but autumn weekdays offer the quietest, most rewarding visits. Expect well-maintained trails, clean facilities, and a genuinely peaceful setting that punches above its modest acreage.
