Grand Portage State Park sits at Minnesota’s northeastern tip in Cook County, where the Pigeon River forms the U.S.-Canada border. At just 278 acres, it’s one of the state’s smaller parks — but it holds Minnesota’s biggest bragging right: the High Falls of the Pigeon River, a 120-foot cascade that ranks as the tallest waterfall in the state. No visit to the North Shore is complete without seeing it.

A half-mile paved trail leads from the visitor center to the High Falls overlook, making it accessible to visitors of all ability levels. For a more rugged outing, the 3.5-mile Middle Falls Trail winds through boreal forest to a second impressive waterfall on the Pigeon River. Both trails reward hikers with views of dense spruce-fir woodland and, in autumn, brilliant fall color along the ridgeline.

The park’s location on the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation adds cultural depth to the visit. Interpretive displays at the visitor center explore the Ojibwe heritage of the area and the historic fur trade route that gives the park its name. Grand Portage National Monument, just minutes away, expands on that story.

There is no campground within the park, but nearby options along the Gunflint Trail and in Grand Portage provide plenty of places to set up base. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall — snowmelt in May and June sends the falls into their most dramatic flow, while September brings color and cooler hiking temperatures.
