Perched on Menagerie Island off the southwest tip of Isle Royale, this historic lighthouse has guided mariners through Lake Superior’s treacherous waters since 1875. The stone tower, one of the most remote lighthouses in the Great Lakes, remains an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The lighthouse is not open to the public, though kayakers and boaters can view it from the water. Its isolated setting against rugged Superior shoreline makes it a prized subject for photographers, with late summer offering the best light and calmest conditions.
