Rock of Ages Light

Rising from the treacherous waters off Washington Island in Michigan’s Lake Superior, Rock of Ages Light has guided mariners since 1908. The steel-and-concrete tower stands as one of the most isolated lighthouses in the Great Lakes, built to mark dangerous rock formations that claimed numerous vessels. Its construction on a submerged reef was an engineering feat, requiring workers to battle harsh open-water conditions.

The lighthouse remains an active navigational aid but is not open to the public. Best viewed by boat, it photographs beautifully during golden hour or under dramatic storm skies in summer and early fall. Nearby, visitors can explore Isle Royale National Park’s rugged trails, historic shipwrecks, and abundant wildlife.
