Cascade River State Park sits along Minnesota’s North Shore in Cook County, where the Cascade River carves through ancient volcanic rock on its dramatic descent to Lake Superior. Spanning 2,867 acres of rugged terrain, this park is defined by its series of cascading waterfalls — the river drops nearly 900 feet over its final three miles, creating a staircase of rushing water framed by dense boreal forest.

The main trail follows the river gorge upstream, crossing footbridges that put you directly above the falls. In spring, snowmelt turns the cascades into thundering whitewater. By autumn, the maple and birch canopy lights up in brilliant oranges and golds against the dark basalt canyon walls — arguably the best fall color viewing on the entire North Shore.

Hikers can access 18 miles of trails ranging from the easy riverside loop to sections of the Superior Hiking Trail that climb to overlooks above Lake Superior. In winter, the park offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through snow-draped spruce and cedar forests.
