Ludington State Park
Stretching across 4,800 acres where the Pere Marquette River meets Lake Michigan, Ludington State Park is one of Michigan’s most beloved outdoor destinations. The park occupies a narrow strip of land between the big lake and Hamlin Lake, creating a landscape of towering sand dunes, dense hardwood forests, and miles of undeveloped shoreline that feels remarkably wild for a state park.
The Big Sable Point Lighthouse, standing at the park’s northern tip since 1867, is the signature draw. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of Lake Michigan, and the 1.8-mile walk along the beach to reach it is half the experience. The park’s trail system covers over 18 miles, with the Skyline Trail offering some of the most dramatic dune views in the Lower Peninsula.
Ludington’s three campgrounds provide nearly 400 sites ranging from modern full-hookup spots at Pines to the more secluded Beechwood and Cedar loops. Reservations fill fast—booking six months ahead for July and August weekends is not unusual.
Summer brings warm swimming at both lakes, with Hamlin Lake’s calmer waters ideal for families and kayakers. Fall transforms the hardwood canopy into a corridor of color, and the crowds thin considerably. Spring migration makes this a rewarding birding stop along the Lake Michigan flyway.
Whether you come for a weekend of beach camping or a day hike to the lighthouse, Ludington delivers that rare combination of easy access and genuine natural beauty that keeps visitors returning year after year.
