Indian Lake State Park sits along the shores of Indian Lake, Michigan’s fourth-largest inland lake, in the heart of the Upper Peninsula’s Schoolcraft County. Spanning 567 acres, the park occupies two separate units on the lake’s south and west shores, giving visitors distinct experiences — one wooded and secluded, the other open and family-friendly.

The lake itself is the main draw. At over 8,600 acres with a average depth around 18 feet, Indian Lake is warm enough for swimming by mid-June and productive enough to keep anglers busy year-round. Walleye, perch, northern pike, and bass are the primary catches, and the lake’s shallow profile means it warms faster than most UP waters. A public boat launch at the park makes access easy.

Beyond fishing, the park offers swimming at a sandy beach, hiking trails through mixed hardwood forest, and easy access to snowmobile trails in winter. The surrounding area connects to Palms Book State Park — home of Kitch-iti-kipi, Michigan’s largest freshwater spring — just a short drive north.

Campgrounds at both units provide a combined 302 sites, a mix of modern and semi-modern options with electrical hookups. Lakeside sites fill fast in July and August, so reservations are worth making early.

The best window to visit runs from late June through September, when lake temperatures peak and Upper Peninsula bugs thin out. Fall color typically arrives by mid-September, making shoulder-season visits surprisingly rewarding. Come prepared for cool UP evenings, even in summer — temperatures regularly drop into the 50s after dark.
