Harrisville State Park sits along a half-mile stretch of Lake Huron shoreline in Alcona County, Michigan, where cedar-lined trails open onto wide sandy beaches and some of the clearest freshwater views on the sunrise coast. The park’s 195 modern campsites are tucked among mature cedar and pine trees, offering solid shade and decent privacy for a state park. Sites near the lake fill fast, so book early if you want to fall asleep to the sound of waves. Electric hookups are available throughout, and a mini-cabin option works well for visitors who want the campground experience without a tent.

During the day, the beach is the main draw — swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing along Lake Huron’s rocky-sandy shore. A short nature trail loops through the cedar swamp behind the campground, where birders regularly spot warblers and woodpeckers. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular in the calm, shallow waters near shore, and the nearby town of Harrisville has a harbor for boaters.

The best window to visit runs from late June through mid-September, when Lake Huron warms enough for comfortable swimming. Fall color peaks in early October and draws a quieter crowd.

Harrisville State Park doesn’t try to compete with Michigan’s bigger destinations. It delivers something better — an unhurried stretch of Great Lakes shoreline where the pace stays slow and the water stays clear.
