Salisbury Beach State Reservation
Stretching across 355 acres along the northernmost point of Massachusetts’ coastline, Salisbury Beach State Reservation offers one of New England’s finest barrier beach experiences. Situated in Essex County where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic Ocean, this state park delivers a compelling mix of sandy shoreline, salt marshes, and dune ecosystems that reward both day-trippers and extended campers alike.
The reservation’s centerpiece is its broad, sweeping beach — nearly four miles of Atlantic-facing sand ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and surf fishing. Behind the dunes, a 484-site campground makes this one of the most popular camping destinations in the Massachusetts state park system. Sites range from basic tent pads to full-hookup RV spots, many tucked among coastal vegetation that provides welcome shade and privacy. Book early for summer weekends, as sites fill months in advance.
Beyond the beach, visitors explore tidal marshes by kayak, cast for striped bass from the jetty at the river mouth, and walk interpretive nature trails through fragile dune habitat. Birders come for shorebird migration, particularly in late summer when plovers and sandpipers work the tidal flats.
Peak season runs from late June through Labor Day, when lifeguards are on duty and the adjacent Salisbury Beach village buzzes with boardwalk-style restaurants, arcades, and ice cream shops. For a quieter visit with fewer crowds and stunning light, come in September or early October — the water stays swimmable into mid-September, and fall foliage along the Merrimack is striking.
