Hampton Beach State Park
New Hampshire (Rockingham County)
Hampton Beach State Park sits where the Rockingham County coastline meets the Atlantic, offering 50 acres of sandy beach, salt marsh, and coastal scenery that draws visitors from across New England. The park occupies the southern tip of Hampton Beach, where the Hampton River flows into the ocean — a convergence that creates unique tidal patterns and some of the best people-watching on the New Hampshire seacoast.
The main attraction is the broad, well-maintained beach itself. Unlike rockier stretches of the New Hampshire coast, Hampton Beach delivers genuine sand-between-your-toes shoreline with gentle wave action suitable for swimming, bodyboarding, and wading with kids. A designated RV campground with full hookups sits just steps from the water, making this one of the rare East Coast parks where you can fall asleep to the sound of surf from your campsite. The 28 RV sites fill quickly, so book well in advance for summer weekends.
Beyond the beach, the park’s salt marsh areas provide solid birdwatching, particularly during spring and fall migrations when shorebirds congregate along the tidal flats. Fishing from the jetty at the river mouth produces striped bass and bluefish in season. The adjacent Hampton Beach village — with its boardwalk, seafood shacks, and annual sand sculpting competition — adds a classic beach-town energy that complements the natural setting.
Visit between late June and early September for warm water and full amenities. Shoulder season visits in May or October trade swimming for solitude and dramatic coastal light.
