North Hampton State Beach
Tucked along New Hampshire’s slender 18-mile coastline in Rockingham County, North Hampton State Beach packs a surprising amount of charm into its compact 1.1 acres. This small but beloved state beach offers one of the most accessible stretches of sandy shoreline in a state where oceanfront is precious real estate.
The beach sits along Route 1A, the scenic coastal road that connects Hampton Beach to Rye, making it an easy stop for road-trippers exploring the Seacoast region. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in character — the beach faces directly east into the Atlantic, delivering unobstructed sunrise views and reliable wave action that draws bodysurfers and boogie boarders throughout the summer months.
Swimming is the main draw from late June through early September, when lifeguards are on duty and water temperatures climb into the mid-60s. Outside the water, visitors spread out for sunbathing, beachcombing, and picnicking. The rocky outcrops at the beach’s edges are worth exploring at low tide, revealing tidal pools with sea stars, crabs, and periwinkles. Birdwatchers will spot sanderlings, plovers, and the occasional great blue heron along the shoreline.
Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with the warmest water in August. Arrive early on summer weekends — parking fills fast given the beach’s small footprint. Fall visits reward with fewer crowds and dramatic skies.
No camping is available at North Hampton State Beach, but several private campgrounds operate nearby along the Seacoast.
