Sandy Point State Reservation
Tucked along the southern tip of Plum Island in Essex County, Sandy Point State Reservation offers 134 acres of pristine barrier beach where the Merrimack River meets the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal gem sits within the larger Parker River National Wildlife Refuge ecosystem, making it one of the most ecologically rich stretches of shoreline in New England.
The reservation’s main draw is its sweeping sandy beach, a quieter alternative to the more crowded North Shore destinations. Beachcombing here turns up whelk shells, sea glass, and the occasional horseshoe crab. The tidal flats at low tide are perfect for wading, and the gentle surf makes it a solid choice for families with young children. Birdwatchers will find the dunes and salt marshes particularly rewarding — piping plovers nest here in summer, and migrating shorebirds pass through in impressive numbers during spring and fall.
Swimming, surf fishing, and wildlife observation are the primary activities. The beach is also a reliable spot for catching sunsets over the marsh side of Plum Island. Hiking is limited to beach walks and informal dune trails rather than formal woodland paths.
Note that beach access may be restricted during piping plover nesting season, typically late spring through mid-summer. The best window for a visit is late July through September, when restrictions lift and the water is warmest.
There are no camping facilities at Sandy Point. Restrooms and limited parking are available seasonally. Arrive early on summer weekends — the small lot fills quickly.
