F. Gilbert Hills State Forest

Tucked into Norfolk County just south of Boston, F. Gilbert Hills State Forest offers over 1,000 acres of rocky New England terrain that feels worlds away from the suburban neighborhoods surrounding it. The forest sits on the edge of Foxborough — yes, that Foxborough — making it a surprisingly wild escape for anyone in the greater Boston area.

The landscape here is defined by glacial geology: exposed granite ledges, kettle ponds, and wooded hills threaded with a network of trails that rewards exploration. More than 23 miles of marked paths wind through oak-hickory forest and past stone walls left behind by colonial-era farmers, giving every hike a sense of layered history. The Warner Trail, a long-distance route stretching from Canton to Diamond Hill in Rhode Island, passes directly through the forest and offers some of its best ridge views.

Mountain bikers and trail runners share the paths with hikers, and the varied terrain — from flat wooded stretches to technical rocky climbs — keeps things interesting for all skill levels. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over when conditions allow. Horseback riding is also permitted on designated trails.

Fall is the standout season here. The hardwood canopy lights up in October, and the rocky overlooks provide natural viewing platforms without the crowds you’d find at more popular foliage destinations.

Visitors should note that the trail system can feel maze-like, especially deeper in the forest. Grab a trail map at the main entrance off Mill Street in Foxborough before heading out.
