Two Lights State Park
Maine (Cumberland County)
Two Lights State Park sits on 41 acres of rocky coastline in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland County, Maine, where the Atlantic crashes against jagged ledges with a force you can feel in your chest. Named for the pair of lighthouse towers that stand just outside the park boundary, this is one of the most dramatic stretches of shoreline in southern Maine — and one of the most accessible, just fifteen minutes from Portland.
The park’s defining feature is its rugged, surf-beaten rock formations. Unlike Maine’s sandy beaches farther south, Two Lights offers tilted slabs of metamorphic rock that slope into the ocean, creating tide pools worth exploring at low water. Bring sturdy shoes — the footing is uneven but the views are extraordinary. On clear days, you can see all the way to Richmond Island and beyond.
Picnic tables dot the oceanside grounds, making this a favorite spot for a windswept lunch with a view. Walking paths trace the shoreline and loop through stands of bayberry and wild rose. Birders come for migrating shorebirds and seabirds, especially during fall passage. Painters and photographers have been drawn here for over a century — Edward Hopper captured these rocks in his famous 1929 painting.
There is no camping at Two Lights, so plan it as a day trip. The park is open year-round, though summer and early fall offer the most comfortable conditions. Winter visits reward the hardy with powerful surf and solitude. Come at golden hour for the best light on those iconic rocks.
