Rising gracefully from the end of a 1,900-foot granite breakwater, Portland Breakwater Light has guided mariners since 1855. This distinctive Greek Revival-style lighthouse, affectionately called “Bug Light” by locals, features elegant Corinthian columns modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens—making it one of America’s most architecturally unique lighthouses.

Though decommissioned and closed to climbing, the lighthouse remains a beloved landmark. Visitors can walk the breakwater for close-up views and exceptional photography, particularly at sunrise when soft light illuminates Portland’s skyline across the harbor.
