Roque Bluffs State Park
Maine (Washington County)
Roque Bluffs State Park sits on the rugged Washington County coastline of Maine, where 274 acres of rocky shoreline, pebble beach, and freshwater pond offer a quieter alternative to the state’s more trafficked coastal parks. This is Downeast Maine at its most authentic — no crowds, no gift shops, just the Atlantic crashing against granite and the smell of salt and spruce.
The park’s standout feature is its unusual pairing of ocean and freshwater swimming. Schoppee Point Road leads to a crescent of smooth stones along the ocean shore, while just inland, Simpson Pond provides warmer, calmer water — a welcome option on days when the Atlantic runs cold, which is most of them. A sand beach lines the pond’s edge, making it a favorite for families with young children.
Hiking trails wind through mixed forest along the bluffs, with viewpoints overlooking Englishman Bay and the scattered islands beyond. Birdwatchers will find the marshland between pond and ocean particularly productive, with ospreys, bald eagles, and migrating shorebirds making regular appearances. Tidepooling along the rocky shore reveals sea urchins, periwinkles, and starfish at low tide.
The park is a day-use area — no camping is available on-site. For overnight stays, look to nearby Cobscook Bay State Park, roughly 40 minutes east.
Visit between late June and September for the best weather, though even midsummer temperatures rarely climb past the mid-70s. Bring layers. The Downeast fog has its own schedule.
