Fort O’Brien State Historic Site
Maine (Washington County)
Fort O’Brien State Historic Site sits on the rocky shores of Machiasport in Washington County, where the Machias River meets the sea. This compact two-acre site holds an outsized place in American history — it marks the location of the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Machias in June 1775, predating Bunker Hill by days.
The earthwork fortifications you’ll walk today date primarily from later conflicts, rebuilt during the War of 1812 and again during the Civil War, layering three centuries of coastal defense into one small headland. Interpretive signage walks you through each era, making it easy to picture the gun emplacements and harbor watches that once defined this spot.
The real draw beyond the history is the view. From the bluff, you’ll look out across Machias Bay with its working lobster boats and spruce-covered islands — one of the most quietly dramatic overlooks on the Downeast coast. Bring binoculars; bald eagles and ospreys are regulars here.
This is a day-use site with no camping facilities. Plan for a visit of 30 to 60 minutes — enough to read the markers, explore the earthworks, and take in the panorama. The grounds are open and exposed, so a windbreaker is smart even in July.
Best time to visit: Late May through early October. Summer brings the warmest weather, but September offers thinner crowds and the first hints of fall color on the surrounding hills. The site is free and open dawn to dusk.
