Cutler Coast, Maine

Tucked along Washington County’s rugged shoreline, Cutler Coast preserves over 12,000 acres of Bold Coast wilderness — one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in the eastern United States. Dark basalt cliffs rise nearly 100 feet above the Atlantic, carved by centuries of relentless surf into jagged headlands and hidden cobblestone beaches that feel genuinely remote.

The marquee experience here is the Coastal Trail, a roughly 5.5-mile loop that threads through dense spruce-fir forest before breaking out onto exposed cliff tops with sweeping ocean views. On clear days, you can spot Grand Manan Island across the Bay of Fundy. The trail is moderately challenging — expect roots, mud, and uneven terrain — but the payoff is some of the most photogenic scenery Maine has to offer. Birdwatchers come for nesting seabirds along the cliffs, including razorbills and black guillemots, while the forest interior hosts boreal species like spruce grouse and blackpoll warblers.

Backcountry camping is available at three primitive sites along the trail, each offering a secluded spot near the coast. There are no facilities beyond pit toilets, so pack everything in and out.

The best window to visit runs from late May through October. July and August bring the warmest weather and wildflowers on the headlands, while September and early October offer fewer crowds and fall color filtering through the spruce canopy.
