Machias River Corridor
Maine (Washington County)
The Machias River Corridor stretches across more than 10,000 acres of wild Washington County landscape, following one of Maine’s most pristine and undammed rivers. This state-managed corridor protects a remarkable waterway that has drawn paddlers, anglers, and wildlife watchers for generations — and remains refreshingly uncrowded compared to Maine’s more famous destinations.
The Machias River is one of the finest canoe and kayak routes in the Northeast. Paddlers can navigate miles of Class I–III rapids interspersed with calm flatwater, passing through dense boreal forest where moose, bald eagles, and river otters are common sights. The spring run draws serious whitewater enthusiasts when snowmelt swells the current, while summer offers gentler conditions ideal for multi-day float trips.
Atlantic salmon and brook trout make the Machias a destination for fly fishing, particularly in the cooler months of late spring and early fall. The surrounding forestland supports hunting in season, and the corridor’s network of old logging roads provides access for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing when winter transforms the landscape.
Primitive, dispersed camping is available along the river corridor — expect carry-in, carry-out conditions with no developed facilities. This is backcountry Maine at its most authentic.
The best time to visit depends on your interest: May through June for whitewater and salmon, July through September for relaxed paddling and warm-weather camping, and October for some of the most vivid fall foliage in Downeast Maine. Come prepared for blackflies in early summer — they’re part of the experience.
