Fort Pownall
Perched on the banks of the Penobscot River in Stockton Springs, Fort Pownall offers a compact but rewarding visit for history buffs and casual explorers alike. This 3-acre state park preserves the earthwork remains of a British fort built in 1759 during the French and Indian War, making it one of Maine’s oldest military sites.
What makes Fort Pownall special is the combination of deep colonial history and a stunning riverside setting. The original fort was burned by the British during the Revolutionary War to prevent American capture, and today you can still trace the outline of its earthen ramparts rising above the surrounding landscape. Interpretive signs walk you through the fort’s strategic role guarding the Penobscot River, once a critical corridor between British and French territories.
The grounds are ideal for a short afternoon visit. Walk the perimeter of the earthworks, explore the grassy open field where the garrison once stood, and take in views of Penobscot Bay and the river below. Birdwatching is excellent here, particularly during spring and fall migrations when osprey and bald eagles frequent the waterway. Picnicking on the bluffs is a local favorite.
At just 3 acres, this isn’t a full-day destination, but it pairs perfectly with a drive along Route 1 through Waldo County. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers filling the earthworks in June and golden foliage framing the river views by October.
