Donnell Pond
Maine (Hancock County)
Donnell Pond sprawls across more than 15,000 acres of undeveloped wilderness in Hancock County, Maine, offering one of the state’s most rewarding escapes for hikers, paddlers, and backcountry explorers. Tucked between the towns of Franklin and Sullivan, this vast public reserved land encompasses several pristine lakes — Donnell Pond, Tunk Lake, and Spring River Lake among them — ringed by low granite mountains with summit views that rival Acadia National Park without the crowds.
The hiking here is outstanding. Schoodic Mountain, the area’s crown jewel, delivers panoramic views of Frenchman Bay, Mount Desert Island, and the surrounding blueberry barrens from its open granite summit — a moderate climb that rewards well beyond its effort. Black Mountain and Caribou Mountain offer similarly striking vistas with even fewer boots on the trail.
Paddlers will find miles of quiet shoreline to explore, with remote sand beaches accessible only by canoe or kayak. The water clarity in Donnell Pond itself is remarkable, and on calm mornings the reflections of surrounding ridgelines are stunning.
Primitive backcountry campsites dot the lakeshores, reachable by boat or on foot — perfect for those who prefer solitude over amenities. There are no hookups or designated campgrounds here, so come prepared to be self-sufficient.
Visit from late June through October. Summer brings warm swimming and long paddling days, while autumn transforms the hardwood slopes into a blaze of color that’s best appreciated from the summits. Blackflies can be fierce in late May and early June, so plan accordingly.
